SAF Continues To Grow Industry’s Influence in Washington - safnow.org

SAF participated in an event to support a key member of Congress with a family background in the floriculture industry, Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI).

First elected to Congress in 2014, Rep. John Moolenaar represents the heavily agricultural 4th District of Michigan. Prior to being elected to Congress, he served in the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate and worked as a chemist and business development director.

Rep. Moolenaar sits on the influential House Subcommittee on Agriculture Appropriations which determines funding levels for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and its programs. During the event hosted by SAF, the importance of the Floriculture and Nursery Research Initiative (FNRI) and the Floriculture Crops Summary, both of which were taken to Capitol Hill by SAF members during Congressional Action Days (CAD), were discussed.

During the event, Rep Moolenaar noted that he had flowers in the blood as his grandfather immigrated from Holland to the US and grew and sold flowers in the Midwest which created lasting ties to the industry.

In supporting members of Congress who support the floriculture industry, SAF through SAFPAC, its political action committee, works to ensure that friends of the industry are elected to Congress and that the industry wields influence in Washington, DC.

SAFPAC is the only political action committee actively working in Washington to promote and protect the floriculture industry.
