Words of Advice for Anxious Times - safnow.org

The current global situation is unprecedented — and the news can feel pretty grim. This week, however, we were heartened to read some words of advice from floral professionals that point to the resiliency of a very hard-working industry.

Feeling isolated? Read on for a boost from experienced industry members:

Keep Notes. “The best advice I’ve gotten so far is from my dad. He told me that I need to take notes, make a file called SIP (Stay in Business) and store it somewhere safe. He told me that he created a file and brainstormed ideas in 2008 when business was difficult… I think that this type of practice is something that can save a business.” Cameron Pappas, Norton’s Florist in Birmingham, Alabama, SAF Next Gen Task Force

Put Downtime to Use. “Take time to fix up your shop: paint, clean, organize and become a better business.” Eileen Looby Weber, AAF, of Lake Forest Flowers in Lake Forest Illinois,

Be Prudent. “Stay calm, wash your hands, and don’t buy things you don’t need.” Carly Anechiarico of Blossom Flower Shops in Yonkers, New York,

Put on a Happy Face. “Even in the uncertainty, try and stay positive.” Zoë Gallina, AAF, Botanica International Design Studio, Tampa, Florida

Just Keep Swimming. “I was thinking about the economic crash of 2008 and remembering that we had to slash everything to make it through that. But above all, is to stay calm and take it one day at a time. It’s best not to dwell on the ‘what if’s’ because that makes you crazy… Lots of us have weathered many business storms and we know that careful attention to the day-to-day will see us through.Rakini Chinery, AAF, AzMF, Allan’s Flowers, Prescott, Arizona

Share More. Communicate constantly with your employees and customers. Talk about steps you are taking and why.” Kaitlin Radebaugh, AAF, Radebaugh Florist & Greenhouses, Towson, Maryland

Help Each Other. “This is not the first time a hardship has befallen our industry. The power of flowers will hold true once again. When this is over, we have to make sure to spread as many smiles as possible.  We need to rely on the partnerships we’ve developed over the many years of doing business knowing that together we can all achieve more. We need to continue to do whatever necessary to make sure we’re all ready to continue doing business the same way once this is over.” Oscar Fernandez Equiflor-Rio Roses, Miami

Be Proactive. “Be mindful of the safety and well-being of your customers and employees, and if you remain open, try to run promotions or giveaways that will help keep the business functioning and afloat while the crisis runs its course.” Brian Kusuda, Jimmy’s Flowers in Ogden, Utah
