SOCIAL MEDIA: Post Suggestions & Advice

Social media should be a key component of your research promotion strategy. Your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels give you an opportunity to inform, educate and inspire your customers. The research provides scientific proof that flowers are not just pretty — they can have a true impact on health and well-being. Get your customers used to having flowers in the home and once they experience the positive benefits, they will see flowers as the best gift option to give those positive feelings to someone else.

Follow these tips for effective social media

Facebook is a great way to capture attention using multiple media types, but you don’t need to “flood the stream” by posting every five minutes. The algorithm dictates what content is seen based on its engagement value, not so much how often you post (and posting too much on Facebook can actually work against you). Have some fun with it. For instance, if you have a customer who is in the shop and seems relaxed and cheerful when looking at your flowers, ask if they would be willing to be featured in a quick video holding flowers and talking about how they make them feel. Post it and include a link to the Flowers and Stress Relief research.

Twitter can be used to provide minute-by-minute updates and look-ins. Since Twitter is still maintaining a chronological feed, it helps to stay active and post regularly to make sure your content is seen. Twitter is not as visual as Facebook or Instagram (although you can post pictures within your feed), but it can still be effective in spreading a message and getting people informed. Always include the hashtag #stressless.

Instagram is a great way to showcase your beautiful flowers, using a combination of timeline posts and “Stories” posts to capture attention. Think of timeline posts as your anchor content; these are the images that you want to be remembered for, because they don’t expire and can be accessed through your profile at any time. Use Stories for the quick, fun and clever posts (pictures or quick video) that help make your timeline posts more visible and engaging. Remember, Instagram’s algorithm works in much the same way as Facebook’s, so focus on engaging content that gets people’s attention, keeps it, and encourages likes, comments and tags. Include the main study result right in the post. For Stories, give followers a look into your cooler at the latest varieties, or your latest “wow” design that is going out, with the hashtag #stressless or a poll “Did this provide you with a moment of calm?”

We recommend posting content directly to Instagram and cross-posting to Facebook from within the Instagram platform. In addition, we suggest posting to Twitter natively — doing so allows photos to appear within the Twitter stream, capturing the attention of those scanning through content. Always include the #stressless hashtag.

Why hashtags? Hashtags are words or phrases used on social media sites (prefaced by a # sign) that identify specific content and messaging. In this instance, using #stressless indicates that a photo or message is part of a larger content series. There are many non-floral posts with the hashtag #stressless, and that’s good. Including that hastag in your posts puts flowers in the space of stress relief content, and reaches people who want to follow that conversation — therefore further spreading the word about flower power.
