Industry CPA Talks Key Post-Holiday Questions - safnow.org

You made it through a most unusual Mother’s Day. Congratulations! But have you and your team documented what went right and what you learned? A longtime industry financial pro said that’s a critical step in any holiday plan.

Last year, Floral Management contributing writer Derrick Myers, CPA, CFP, PFCI, of Crockett Myers, shared five questions that every retail florist should tackle after Mother’s Day. While the circumstances of the 2019 and 2020 holidays couldn’t be more different, the questions themselves are still important and the process of engaging your staff could help you guide your business through the next few months.

“If you want ideas from your staff, you have to do it positively,” Myers said. “No matter how outlandish an idea seems, write it down. It could be one of the best gems you pull out of the whole meeting.”

Ask staff (in person, via email, phone or video conference call):

  • What worked this Mother’s Day that we need to do more of next year?
  • What could we have done better, or possibly eliminate?
  • Should we market any differently next year?
  • What could have been great if only…?
  • Did we offer too few or too many product offerings for the holiday?
